Rowland started with career rising through the Port Vale junior ranks[1] to sign professionally with the club for the start of the 2001–02 season. He scored his first – and only – senior goal on 29 December, in a 3–1 win over Colchester United at Vale Park. He would go on to make 136 appearances for the third tier club in all competitions over the next five years, making between 24 and 30 appearances each season. However following the conclusion of the 2005–06 season he was not retained by manager Martin Foyle.[2]
In August 2006 he signed with Conference National side Southport, making 34 league appearances in the 2006–07 season, before departing in April 2007.[3][4] The club were relegated into the Conference North.
In January 2010, Rowland joined Welsh Premier League side Caersws from Cymru Alliance club Gresford Athletic.[5] He made fifteen appearances for the club, but could do little to prevent the club finishing a full 28 points short of safety.
